Blue and White Chinoiserie in Coastal Design

Blue and White Chinoiserie in Coastal Design

If you have spent any time perusing the E&I products you will see that we have a healthy selection of blue and white decor items.

One design style that has captivated us is (blue and white) chinoiserie, which is a design style that originated from East Asia.

Blue and white chinoiserie combines two classic colors that feature crisp white backgrounds with both vibrant and softer, coastal blue colors.  This creates a timeless feel to this design style plus, it provides versatility when adding in or taking out decor pieces.  Much of our collection is thrifted and we hope that you will be inspired to create your classic and cozy areas.

The Classic Blues and Whites

We love this classic take on design so much that we have incorporated an area into the website dedicated to both blue and white home decor and kitchen items, as well as for inspiration for our Coastal design area.  Of course, when possible we will feature our own home(s) but we will also highlight other homes as well  (and give proper credit to those photos).

Dawn, of @dawnmoonhome, is our resident and ultra-talented interior decorator.  She has an eye for all of the necessary design elements and aesthetics that elevate a space, below is a perfect example.  This simple yet, sophisticated table setting evokes a desire to sit and enjoy the light and airy feel that so easily lends itself to basic decor principals of coastal design.   In addition to the blue and white dishes, the table is also accented with classic coastal elements such as metals (brass) and natural details such as seagrass and wood. Who wouldn’t want to be a guest at this table?

But what makes this classic blue and white scene, well, so classically coastal chic?  Let’s look at a little history and more inspiration.

What is Chinoiserie

First of all, what is chinoiserie?

Chinoiserie is a Western inspired take on this Chinese artistic style.  Chinoiserie dates back to the 17th and 18th century during the height of global trading.  European artisans hoped recreate this Chinese style, which lead to the creation of the blue and white chinoiserie.  Today, its distinctive decorative style can be found mixed in with traditional, coastal, eclectic and yes, even modern design.  Blue and white chinoiserie is a versatile design element and is popular among many designers.

Blue and white chinoiserie is distinctive with intricate, hand-painted design in blue upon a white backgrounds that is generally porcelain or ceramic.  The scenes depict various Asian inspired landscapes with often mythical looking creatures mixed in with traditional Chinese symbols.  Its origin dates back to the Ming Dynasty era and quickly captivated the globe.

Blue and White Chinoiserie in Coastal Decor

Let’s briefly discuss the allure of coastal decor and its staying power in the world of design.  Per this article from AD, “Coastal design focuses on soft and neutral tones as a backdrop but is paired with natural elements such as linens, woods and metals.”  Additionally, Coastal decor features classic colors such as blues and whites, enter chinoiserie as a beautiful addition to this design.

Including blue and white chinoiserie pieces not only makes a design statement but it helps to anchor your coastal inspired decor.  The options are endless as you can add in porcelain vases, ginger jars, and decorative dishes.

A perfect example is the mix that Dawn uses on her kitchen shelves below.  As you can see, she uses white stoneware, wood shelves, art, urns, recipe books, cutting boards mixed in with her blue and white chinoiserie.  This blend lends itself to the perfect coastal vibe while keeping the overall feel classic with the blue and white decor.

Dreamy Designs for Your Space

Of course, you can continue to add this same feel to all areas of your home.  Mixing in textural elements such as blue and white chinoiserie wallpaper.  Choose serene scenes such as landscapes, flowers, and animals, like delicate birds.  Creating a space with these elements creates a creamy backdrop that lends itself to the sea and sky, again bringing a coastal ambience.

Of course, adding in blue and white chinoiserie with soft furnishings such as throw throw pillows and fabrics will also add to the classic yet, coastal vibe.  Incorporating the patterns with natural accents such as wood, bamboo and natural fabrics such as cotton and linen will transform a space.

Adding in art, murals, paintings and prints is an easy way to add some fun blue and white chinoiserie decor without having too much commitment – it is always easier to change out artwork as styles evolve.  Imagine a gallery wall with varying types of artwork.  These types of decor create tranquility while continuing to create a sophisticated atmosphere.
